BIOGRAPHY


A native of Leuven, Belgium, Jeroen D’hoe (b. 1968) received a doctorate (2003) and a master degree (2000) in composition at The Juilliard School, where he studied composition with John Corigliano. In addition, he holds degrees in composition from the Lemmens Institute in Belgium (1996) and musicology from the University of Leuven (1992).

Jeroen D’hoe won the National Composition Competition of the Queen Elisabeth Competition (2003) and the SABAM Prize for Composition (2003) with Toccata-Scherzo for piano solo, the Composition Competition of the Province Flemish-Brabant, Belgium (2002) with Festival Anthem for orchestra, and the Juilliard Composers Competition in (2001) with Wavechain for piano and orchestra (1999).

Jeroen D’hoe recently composed music for “SKIN” (2007) – an audiovisual installation in collaboration with calligrapher and text artist Brody Neuenschwander – performed and recorded by mezzo-soprano Els Van Laethem and guitarist Aram Van Ballaert. SKIN has been presented as part of expositions by Brody Neuenschwander in the “Hospitaalmuseum,” Bruges (Sept. 2007 - Febr. 2008) and “Ginza Graphic Gallery,” Tokyo (March-April 2008). Jeroen D’hoe currently composes a trumpet concerto, commissioned by the Limburgs Symfonie Orkest (Maastricht, The Netherlands), featuring soloist Benny Wiame (premiere 2009–2010, dates t.b.a.)

A prolific composer, Jeroen D’hoe recently also composed the oratorio “Wij zijn wij” (2006) on a libretto by Saskia De Coster, for the city of Leuven (Belgium) – on the occasion of the “175th Anniversary of Belgium”. In 2006, he also orchestrated Samuel Barber’s “Hermit Songs” for soprano and orchestra for the Musica Sacra Maastricht Festival (The Netherlands), and composed the chamber work "Petit Concert…Du Diable" for the ensemble Frescamente and pianist Jan Michiels. Earlier, he composed Symphony No. 1 “Open” for the Flemish Radio Orchestra (2005) and created Crosstalk (2005) together with pop vocalist and composer Paul Michiels: a song cycle for pop/jazz vocalist (with lyrics by Michael Garvin), combining “Great American Songbook”, jazz, and pop idioms (www.crosstalk.be). He also prepares a piano solo work for Jan Michiels.

Jeroen D’hoe also composed Les Idées (2005) for mezzo-soprano and chamber ensemble, commissioned by Oxalys, Toccatas commissioned by the Phoenix Trio (2003), Scherzo (2002) commissioned by the New Juilliard Ensemble and Visions (2002) for mixed chorus and string quartet, which received its first performance at the opening ceremony of the International Musicological Society (IMS) Congress 2002 in Leuven (Belgium). Other compositions, commissioned by Belgian ensembles and orchestras, include: Festival Anthem (2001) and Violin Concerto (2000) for the Flemish Radio Orchestra, Waves for oboe and piano (1999) for the Flanders Philharmonic Orchestra; Cummings Songs for soprano, violin, piano, and orchestra (1998) for the Collegium Instrumentale Brugense, and Trancircle for orchestra (1996) for the Beethoven Academie. He also composed Four Yeats Songs for soprano and orchestra (1995).

Jeroen D’hoe received a fellowship from the Belgian American Educational Foundation (BAEF, 1998-1999) and the C.V. Starr Doctoral Fellowship (2000–03), along with The Piser Scholarship (2000–01), the G. Gershwin Memorial Scholarship (2000–01), and the Gretchaninoff Memorial Prize (2000–01). From 1995 to 1998 he was a teaching assistant for harmony at the Musicology Department and from 1992 to 1996 scientific assistant at the ABB Chair of New Music at the University of Leuven (Belgium) and from 1999 to 2001 a teaching assistant for ear training at The Juilliard School.

Jeroen D’hoe teaches composition and music history at the Conservatory of Utrecht (The Netherlands), music history and music analysis at the Lemmensinstituut (Belgium), and music theory at the Academy of Tienen (Belgium).

“Festival Anthem” (2001) and Violin Concerto (2000), performed by the Flemish Radio Orchestra, conducted by Bjarte Engeset, with Otto Derolez, violin solo (Violin Concerto), have been released on CD (label: VROK2002/1 and VROK2000/1, respectively).
